The UK National Lottery is making massive resources available for the demonstration of new technologies and their social and economic benefits. These are being deployed as part of the country’s Millennium Celebrations.
The UK Millennium Landmark Projects are probably the largest investment in the deployment and demonstration of potential social and economic benefits from new technologies that has been undertaken to date throughout the world. The significance and scale of this investment is unparalleled. It is likely that significant additional benefits will be obtained through the exchange of best practice at the European level.
Some of the ways in which the Millennium is being celebrated throughout Europe are identified in this report. The purpose and likely impact of the UK National Lottery is discussed and described, as is the purpose of the Millennium Commission. The aims and objectives of the New Technopolis Project (UK Millennium Project for the Eastern Region) are identified, and its potential social and economic impact described. All UK Millennium projects (and their resources) are identified and described.
Millennium Projects are not regarded as public funding, and are considered to be investments by the private sector. However, the organisations responsible for delivering the projects are required to adhere to public procurement policies, and provide services to a defined location (geographic location). This causes problems in exploiting the project – and these difficulties are described.
